email me to talk about your project. this is the internets web site for audio engineer nick kraska. i do what it takes to make it happen.
i operate my home studio - INSPECTOR STUDIOS, which has 2" 24 track analog recording, as well as DAW (digital) capabilities and a wide array of mics and outboard gear. 1/4" analog mixdown also available. if you actually care about the details for the tools, email me as i'd be happy to yak your ear off about boring shit, but i find most people don't really care much. $250/day - $25/hr + materials (tape costs if applicable) similarly equipped rooms in chicago are usually $350-$450/day.
i freelance in other studios as well, i favor electrical audio. www.electrical.com i keep the rates at INSPECTOR especially low to encourage bands to take advantage of the outstanding rooms at EA for basic tracking , and then bring the project back to INSPECTOR for overdubs and mixing. since i've worked in both the crappiest and nicest places around, i'd like to encourage those generally working "on the cheap" to experience what a world-class facility can impart on your project - so i'm taking a cut on my side of the project to encourage that. i charge $100/day when freelancing (in addition to the day rate at the studio - so based on current pricing, $500/day total in studio b at electrical, $700/day in studio a)
lastly i've also done the occasional live recording when the need arises.
some bands i've worked with: (no particular order other than the ones with links have something i recorded on thier myspace pages as of right now)
the quick me bio. i currently play drums in bang! bang! and have toured the world with new black/bang! bang!/hanalei. i started recording in the early 90s with a cassette 4 track recording my bands and friends bands. i went to uw madison and got a degree in interarts and technology, learning the awesomeness of early sequencing and synchronization of video to audio - among other useful things like making lots of "performance art". all the while i was living a double life in the underground scene there playing in the experimental/no-wave band ng kindheit and helping friends bands record at local studios. i moved to chicago in 1999 and started to get involved in the scene here playing in the south of no north and spending too much time at the fireside bowl and empty bottle. for a short time i was recording bands live on WLUW for thier late night punk show and even recorded a then unknown suburban pop-punk band called fall out boy. true story. eventually i landed an internship at the uberstudio in humboldt park while piecing together my own gear and started freelancing at studio greg studios, semaphore and electrical audio or wherever i could: practice spaces, lofts, basements, whatever. some engineers i've worked with that have taught me much are: greg norman, jon congleton, mark schwartz and brenden burke.
